Inside the dimly lit radiology suite, every fraction of a second counts, yet clinicians were constantly struggling with an outdated C-arm medical imaging console. Stiff, tactile dome buttons made adjustments slow, offered poor feedback, and pulled vital attention away from the patient. I was brought in to research and support the complete redesign of this safety-critical physical interaction layer.
To truly understand the problem, I immersed myself in the operating room, shadowing operators through high-pressure clinical procedures. Watching gloved hands fumble with clunky buttons while eyes remained locked on primary monitors made the cognitive friction painfully clear.
Armed with these insights, I supported our team's shift from rigid mechanical controls to an intuitive capacitive touchscreen interface. We designed high-contrast state indicators, bold visual hierarchy, and precise touch targets calibrated specifically for gloved operation. Every interaction was streamlined to prevent accidental inputs while enabling instantaneous micro-adjustments under intense clinical conditions.
The modernized console vastly improved device state readability and speed, creating a far safer tool for high-stakes medical procedures. Ultimately, this project marked a defining milestone in my career—my first experience designing at the complex intersection of hardware and software.
